Lucky 11-Year-Old Swimmer in Folsom, Calif.

Lifeguard

October 10, 2013 - The July day when Ian Lathrop went into sudden cardiac arrest during swim practice was one of the luckiest days of his life. Everything fell into place perfectly for the 11-year-old swim team member.

His swim coaches and the lifeguards knew exactly what to do. They called 911 and started CPR. Their CPR training kicked in although they had never had to use it before. When the Folsom Fire Dept. arrived, paramedics administered two shocks to Ian’s heart with a ZOLL E Series® Monitor/Defibrillator to restore his heartbeat. After three days in the hospital, Ian woke up and says he doesn’t remember a thing. Ian survived neurologically intact and now has an implanted device to prevent a recurrence.
