AEDs in Hospitals and Clinics Becoming More Common

While we usually picture automated external defibrillators (AED) in public places--schools, airports, health clubs, etc.--hospitals and clinics are starting to use AEDs as an important first step in early defibrillation. This month's issue of Diagnostic and Invasive Cardialogy discusses the increased presence of AEDs in hospitals and clinics. The article discusses the Mayo Clinic, which has hundreds of ZOLL AEDs throughout the institition, including at nurses' stations. Hospitals are finding that time is of the essence - for every minute that therapy is delayed, the patient's chance of survival decreases by 10-15%.
