Virginia YMCA Patron Saved with Help of AED Plus

spin cycle fitness classDec. 30, 2010A 53-year-old man who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) at the Salem, Va., YMCA, will be ringing in the New Year with some extra gratitude this year. The victim, an avid runner, collapsed during his early morning spin-cycling class. The instructor of the class retrieved the AED Plus installed at the facility, and two class participants, a physician's assistant and a dentist, used the automated external defibrillator, administering a shock which revived the patient.

Virginia AED legislation currently requires some schools to have portable defibrillators, but it does not have legislation that covers health or fitness clubs.
