June 20, 2013 - Dr. Jack Layden is taking care of the home team and the competition. He facilitated the donation of two AEDs to the Glens Falls Greenjackets semi-pro football team upon learning that a player on an opposing team died of sudden cardiac arrest during a game against the Greenjackets. One unit will remain at the team’s home field, while the other will travel with the New York-based team to away games.

The ZOLL AED Plus® units were donated by Adirondack Cardiology Associates, where Dr. Layden practices. He stepped in upon learning that a player on an opposing team died of sudden cardiac arrest during a game against the Greenjackets. Dr. Layden, who pointed out that 10 times as many people die each year from cardiac arrest as die from breast cancer annually, told the Saratoga Today Newspaper, “By ensuring this equipment is available to our local athletes, we could save a life.”

The Greenjackets share East Field, their home field, with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles minor league baseball team, so the AED will be available during Golden Eagles home games as well. Although rare, a condition known as commotio cordis can result when a fast-moving projectile such as a baseball or hockey puck strikes an individual in the chest directly over the heart, sending the heart into ventricular fibrillation. Having a defibrillator on site is crucial to lifesaving efforts if commotio cordis occurs.
